SURPRISE, Ariz. -- A recount Tuesday revealed the Royals to be one pitcher short when they opened official workouts with an afternoon series of drills at their year-round complex.
Turns out left-handed reliever Jose Mijares is not in camp as club officials once believed. In fact, Mijares has yet to pick up his visa in Venezuela because of difficulties stemming from unspecified family issues. We dont know where he is, manager Ned Yost said. We were told (Monday) by the hotel that he had checked in. He hasnt. Were trying to get in touch with him.The Royals signed Mijares, 27, as a free agent in December to serve as the situational lefty in their bullpen. He received a one-year deal for $925,000 less than 10 days after getting non-tendered by Minnesota.Mijares was 0-2 with a 4.59 ERA last season in 58 appearances for the Twins. He battled elbow problems early in the season before compiling a 2.49 ERA in his final 21 outings. The Royals opened official workouts Tuesday for the 30 pitchers and six catchers on the camp roster. The first full-squad workout, for all 57 players, is Saturday. Infielders Alcides Escobar and Yuniesky Betancourt are the only other players yet to report in.Dutch treatWere there a club award for the best pre-camp performance by a pitcher and there isnt the likely recipient would be reliever Greg Holland. At least in Yosts eyes. From his side sessions, Yost said, on a scale from one to 10, hes at 10-plus. If you could film somebody and say this is the perfect side session, youd film Greg Holland.A side session is when a pitcher throws from a bullpen mound and doesnt face hitters.Gordos jokeWhen veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur arrived over the weekend, he found his gear shifted from its usual place to a locker on the far side of the clubhouse a space wedged between pitcher Ryan Verdugo and outfielder Paulo Orlando.Francoeurs usual spot, because of his status as one of the rosters veterans, is a double locker in a prime area of the room. Turned out, outfielder Alex Gordon, who has been in Surprise since Feb. 5, shifted Francoeurs gear as a gag.He got me good, Francoeur admitted, after moving everything back to his usual place. Ill get even, but Ill wait a little bit so he wont be expecting things. Its not over.Alumni donationsThe Royals Alumni Association announced $30,000 in donations to 26 charities and community programs in the Kansas City area.
