More News

The Royals reached one-year contract agreements Saturday with four more players: first baseman Eric Hosmer, third baseman Mike Moustakas, center fielder Lorenzo Cain and right-handed pitcher Luis Mendoza.

Hosmer, Moustakas and Cain are projected starters, while Mendoza, who is out of options, is in line for a long look this spring to win a job in the rotation or bullpen.

All four players have less than three years of major-league service, which meant they had no negotiating leverage. The Royals now have just seven unsigned players on their 40-man roster, all of whom have less than three years of service time.

Hosmer, 22, received $502,500 after batting .293 with 19 homers and 78 RBIs in 128 games following his May 6 promotion from Class AAA Omaha.

Moustakas, 23, got $487,250 after batting .263 with five homers and 30 RBIs in 89 games following his June 10 arrival from Omaha.

Cain, 25, got $480,850 after spending nearly all of last season at Omaha after coming to the Royals in a Dec. 19, 2010, trade with Milwaukee. He became the projected starter in center field following the off-season deal that sent Melky Cabrera to San Francisco.

Mendoza, 28, received $488,925 after resurrecting his career last season by going 12-5 at Omaha while leading the Pacific Coast League with a 2.18 ERA. He also won two starts for the Royals following a late-season promotion.

The major-league minimum salary jumps this season to $480,000 from $414,000 under provisions of the new labor agreement.

Still unsigned: pitchers Louis Coleman, Danny Duffy, Greg Holland and Vin Mazzaro; catcher Sal Perez; and infielders Alcides Escobar and Johnny Giavotella.

The Royals begin official spring workouts Tuesday for pitchers and catchers at their year-round complex. The first full-squad workout is next Saturday.
