The Olathe Northwest girls stayed unbeaten in the Sunflower League on Friday but had to come from behind and used nearly every of the game to do it.

The Ravens defeated seven-time defending Sunflower League champion Olathe South 48-46 before a packed house at Olathe Northwest.

The difference was two free throws by Michaela Crall with 5 seconds left that broke a 46-46 tie.

The victory improved the Ravens to 9-0 in league play and 17-1 overall. They are now assured of a least a tie for their first Sunflower League title. If they win one of their two road games next week at Shawnee Mission South and Olathe North, the Ravens will have the title outright.

“This will be the first time we have won league, and it is the first time we have beaten Olathe South in our nine years of existence,” Ravens’ coach Joel Branstrom said. “This was a great way to send our seniors out on Senior Night.”

It was a tough loss for Olathe South, which came into the week undefeated. The Falcons dropped a 54-51 decision at Shawnee Mission West on Tuesday, and Friday’s loss was their first ever to the Ravens.

With 2 minutes to play, it looked good for the Falcons, who led 46-41.

But Olathe Northwest sophomore Shea Shipman scored inside with 1:36 left and made it 46-43.

Ravens junior Kelsey Brooks then picked up her fourth foul with 1:19 left. Falcons junior Riley White missed the front end of a one-and-one, and the Ravens claimed the rebound.

Brooks missed two free throws with a minute left, but the Falcons turned the ball over.

The Ravens’ Vashti Neal intercepted a pass near the three-point line.

“I was thinking: I am near the line (three-point line),” she said. “I’m a good three-point shooter. I knew when I shot it I had to believe.”

Neal’s shot tied the game at 46-46 with 46 seconds left.

The Ravens next forced a turnover at the 34-second mark and held the ball for the last shot.

The ball went inside to Crall, a 6-foot-3 junior. She barely missed a 5-foot bank shot but was fouled with 5 seconds left.

“I knew I had to put them in no matter what,” she said. “I’m a 70-percent free-throw shooter. Once I shot them, I knew they were good.”

Crall was the leading scorer for the Ravens with 10 points and she had five rebounds. Brooks added nine points, and junior Jaylah Jackson had a game-high seven rebounds.

The Ravens played 11 in the game, and 10 of them scored. Both Neal and Crall came off the bench.

“Neal has been shooting excellent for us,” Branstrom said. “We want to wear teams out.”

Sophomore Bailey Rinehart led the Falcons with a game-high 14 points.

The game was close all the way.

Brooks hit a long three-point shot at the buzzer to give the Ravens a 15-13 lead after the first quarter.

The Ravens had three attempts in the last 10 seconds of the half. Senior Lindsey Poulter hit a short shot at the buzzer that tied the game at 24-24 at halftime.

The Falcons were 21 of 42 from the field for 50 percent, but they were only two of six from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 20 times.
