SURPRISE, Ariz. | -- Lefty reliever Tim Collins, who pitched in a club-leading 68 games last season, agreed to terms Friday on a one-year deal with the Royals for $495,725.
Collins, 22, made $414,000 last season when he went 4-4 with a 3.63 ERA. His 68 appearances tied the Royals’ rookie record set in 2003 by Mike MacDougal.The Royals now have 11 unsigned players on their 40-man roster: pitchers Louis Coleman, Danny Duffy, Greg Holland, Vin Mazzaro and Luis Mendoza; catcher Sal Perez; infielders Alcides Escobar, Johnny Giavotella, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas; and outfielder Lorenzo Cain.All 11 have less than three years of major-league service, which means their contract can be renewed at the club’s discretion.The Royals open spring training Tuesday when pitchers and catchers take part in their first official workout.
