Clark Thomas didn’t nail his dives as well as he would have liked Thursday during the semifinals at the Kansas 6A state diving tournament at Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka.

Thomas, an Olathe Northwest senior who is undefeated in his high school career, managed to position himself to take down the state record nonetheless.

Thomas totaled 399.35 points with his first eight dives.

He’ll have three dives today — the very last ones of his high school career — to best the state record of 557.20 points set by Blue Valley Northwest’s Kelly Marx in 2005.

“I’m in about the position I expected to be, but I had hoped to be in the 430 range like I was at (Sunflower League),” Thomas said.

He missed an inward dive during Thursday’s semifinals and will be counting on an inward dive, an inward 11/2 and a reverse 21/2 in the finals.

“The reverse dives inward are my real big money dives,” Thomas said. “If I hit those, I will be fine.”

BV North’s Chris Cusick (332.10) and Thomas’ teammate, Drew Egan (318.05) sit in second and third. Blue Valley’s Corey Luetjen leads the 5-1A diving with 228.20 points.
