There have been plenty of goals and milestones during Olathe Northwest senior Clark Thomas’ diving career, but his most recent accomplishment snuck up on him.

Battling back spasms at the Sunflower League Swimming and Diving Championships two weeks ago, Thomas was scarcely paying attention to his score through five preliminary dives and three more in the semifinals.

With three to go in the finals, however, a competitor pointed out that Thomas had a shot at the revered 600-point plateau — a significant mark of distinction in the diving world, like hitting four home runs in a baseball game or topping 60 points in basketball.

“We had a break before finals and I didn’t even know what my score was after the first eight, but somebody told me right as we went to get in the water and I realized then I had a shot,” Thomas said.

With only the Kansas 6A state diving meet remaining, Thomas still has never lost in his high school career — and most of the time, it hasn’t even been close.

At league, Thomas blew past the mythical barrier and totaled 608.15 points, winning by nearly 200 points his fourth straight league crown and becoming the first high school diver in the state’s history to crack the 600-point plateau.

“I’m super proud, because I had no idea that was coming,” Thomas said. “Ever since my freshman year, I wasn’t sure I could do it. I’ve seen some of my friends who are big nationally do it. I always thought it would be cool to break 600 one day, but I never thought it would actually happen.”

Thomas, who kicks off the state meet with five preliminary dives today at Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka, isn’t expected to be challenged in the quest for a fourth state championship either.

Of course, he is no longer competing against the field.

Realistically, Thomas is competing against history and for his own place in it, hoping to forge a lasting legacy with another landmark performance.

Thomas’ only real competition is former BV Northwest standout Kelly Marx, who established the current state-meet record by winning the 2005 one-meter diving title with 557.20 points and went on to become an eight-time All-American at Auburn.

Thomas, who will compete at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials in synchronized swimming with Justin Youtsey beginning June 17 in Federal Way, Wash., covets that state-meet record.

He’s had his sights set on it since he was a freshman, but now it is well within reach and would be another nice milestone along his path to a bid for the 2012 London Olympics.

“You never know for sure, but I’ve shown that I can do it twice in a row,” said Thomas, who also scored 580 at his last competition before league. “Now, I just have to keep it up and do what I know how to do. I am just starting to get into a groove with training differently. Now, the main difference is that last year I had all the big dives, but it took that year to perfect all those big dives.”
