The Watchdog | Video equipment stuck, and so are drivers

The problem

Drivers deserve some consideration when turning left, but Ron Lane thinks they get more than their share at Barry Road and U.S. 169.

At the northbound exit, he says, the eastbound left-turn light is several times longer than it needs to be, forcing westbound traffic on Barry Road to wait when no one’s in the opposite turn lane.

“Cars can come eastbound from two stoplights away and still make the light to turn left,” said Lane, who lives in Kansas City.

The answer

Yes, Houston, we have a problem, and the Missouri Department of Transportation is fixing it. Kevin Manning, senior traffic studies specialist at MoDOT, surmised that the video detection was stuck, which caused the left-turn light to max out every time.

The Watchdog says he’d have written more about this, but skedaddled early for the groomer..
