Two men flying low and circling over the home of friends in Clinton County died Tuesday when their small plane crashed and burned in a pasture about 200 yards away from the house.
“The family was outside to wave,” said Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Sheldon Lyon. “During one of those fly bys something went horribly wrong.”The men’s bodies were to be taken to Kansas City for autopsies to be done today. DNA samples were sent to the Highway Patrol lab in Jefferson City for positive identification. That could take one or two days.The crash happened about 4:20 p.m. in northern Clinton County just north of the Shatto Milk Company on Missouri 33, about nine miles west of Cameron, Mo. The plane was a 1967 Piper Cherokee, a single engine propeller craft. One wing was torn off the plane, which crashed upside down. The cabin of the plane burned. The plane was registered in Independence.Lyon said it was not clear what airport the flight originated from or if the pilot filed a flight plan. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.Read more Local News Spotlight
