Twin brothers Aaron and Trevor Engle were born six minutes apart, which is the exact length of a wrestling match, so it was fated perhaps that the Staley seniors would grow up to embrace the sport.
“I don’t think it actually was fate we became wrestlers, but we like to say that,” Trevor said.As fate would have it, the Engles played a pivotal role for the host Falcons in blunting eventual runner-up Kearney’s building momentum Saturday at the Missouri Class 3, District 4 tournament. The Bulldogs, who finished second by 25.5 points, had rattled off three straight titles and had closed the gap in the team chase before Aaron Engle, 37-8, fended off Platte County senior David Miller 4-3 in the championship bout at 152 pounds.“It helped my nerves,” his twin, Trevor, said. “Sometimes, I find myself more nervous for his matches than mine.”Of course, Aaron couldn’t bear to watch either as Trevor followed with a 1-0 decision in the 160-pound title match against Kearney junior Blain Drescher, which rejuvenated Staley and propelled it to the district championship with 243.5 points.“We’ve put in four hard years, so it’s great that we’re both finally district champions,” Aaron Engle said. “I’m a little stunned. But at the same time, I’m just so happy. The happiness definitely overtook the stunned.”Freshman Ethan Koan, 41-9, started the finals in style for the Falcons with an 11-0 win against Platte County sophomore Matt Barmann in the 106-pound title bout. The Falcons added five more titles, including the two won by the Engles.Sophomore Blake Clevinger, 39-12, outlasted Platte County junior Collin Tolliver 3-1 for the crown at 126 and senior Nick Brown, 41-10, edged Sedalia-Smith Cotton’s Dakota Proctor 5-3 in the closing seconds with a barrel roll to prevent a takedown and securing his own. Finally, despite giving up 70 pounds, junior Trent Hosick, 25-0, gutted out a 1-0 victory against Oak Park senior John Cervantes for the heavyweight title.“This is the best district in the state and, if you bring a large crew to state from here, you’re going to do well at the state tournament,” Falcons coach Gary Mayabb said. “We’ve set things up well, but the difference is Kearney’s six up-front guys are going to go score points. We’re going to have to do a great job at fighting our way back through the back side, too.”Kearney snagged five champions, starting with junior Jaret Singh, who edged Warrensburg’s Malacai Collins with a takedown in overtime for a 3-1 win in the championship at 113.The Bulldogs dominated during the middle weights, claiming consecutive titles at 132, 138 and 145.Junior Kevin Kinney, 47-2, started the run with a second-period pin of Staley senior Jeremy Goss. Sophomore Grant Leeth, 51-2, and senior Tanner Minder, 51-3, followed with their own championships, while senior Morgan Fitzgerald, 50-3, later prevailed at 170.Oak Park had two champions, who both will head to state undefeated.Junior Brad Perkins, 33-0, held on for a 5-4 win against Kearney sophomore Seth Brayfield at 120. Perkins, who missed his entire sophomore season with a shoulder injury, improved to 77-0 in his high school career.Meanwhile, Northmen teammate Hashem Omari, 38-0, needed only 1 minute, 10 seconds to pin Warrensburg’s Michael Taylor in the title bout at 195.Fort Osage senior Dillon Taff was the only wrestler not from Staley, Kearney or Oak Park to strike gold, winning the title at 220 with a 6-2 decision against Falcons sophomore Bailey Sutko.Read more High School
