MUNDAY ON MONDAY

Too much to ask

Too much to ask

You’d think that I’m asking for vaultfuls of gold

Or answers to mysteries never yet told;

Astonishing marvels, confounding on sight,

Like spaceships that travel much faster than light;

Or else that I’m asking — incredible feat —

Some labor that Hercules couldn’t complete;

Yes, such you would think I’m requesting with smirk:

A towering burden, exertion, and work

As judged by reaction at time that I’ve paid

Which comes in response to request that I’ve made

When all that I’m asking — it’s hardly much work —

Was “please may I have the receipt?” from the clerk.
