Signs point to Rex Hudler replacing Frank White on TV for Royals

Rex Hudler, a former big-league player with extensive broadcast experience, has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Frank White as the analyst for Royals’ telecasts on Fox Sports Kansas City.

Multiple sources said a decision appears imminent, with many citing Hudler as the leading candidate since ex-Major Leaguer George Frazier was told he didn't get the Royals job. Neither Hudler nor Frazier had any previous connection to the Royals.

Fox Sports has final say in the hiring, though the Royals have input into the decision. White was fired after last season by Fox in what became a messy departure when he blamed the Royals for his dismissal.

Hudler, 51, spent 13 seasons in the big leagues as a utility player for six clubs during 1984-98. He became the then-Anaheim Angels’ analyst upon his retirement and held that position through 2009.

The Angels and Fox Sports Net West suspended Hudler for a brief period in 2003 after he was arrested at Kansas City International Airport for possession of cannabis and medical paraphernalia.

Hudler was hospitalized in 2001 for a brain aneurysm and serves as president of Team Up for Down Syndrome, a nonprofit organization. Millions of video-game enthusiasts know him from his work during 2006-10 as the broadcast voice on MLB: The Show.
