The death of a 3-year-old Richmond, Mo., girl has been ruled accidental.

A pathologist who performed an autopsy determined that the child died of asphyxiation by hanging, Richmond Police Chief Chad Burnine said Wednesday.

The girl’s name has not been released, Burnine added, pending notification of additional family members.

She died after becoming entangled in a jump rope tied to the top of a playground slide at a housing complex. Officers responded to a call just after 5 p.m. Monday and found the girl unresponsive and not breathing. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Burnine said that it appeared other children had tied the rope to the top of the slide so they could pull themselves up from the bottom.

Richmond is in Ray County, about 30 miles northeast of Kansas City.
