Crennel still exploring options for assistant coaches

Chiefs coach Crennel still exploring option of hiring new assistants, particularly on offense.

Some of the NFL teams that made head coaching hires in the past couple of weeks have already filled their staffs with assistants. The Chiefs, who hired Romeo Crennel on Jan. 9, are still looking for some offensive coaches, including a coordinator.

Crennel said Friday he may not have his staff set until after the Feb. 5 Super Bowl.

“It could be a week, it could be two weeks,” Crennel said. “We’re still trying to work through all of that. We’re going to investigate all avenues. In the next couple of weeks, we should know the direction we’re going.”

Former Cleveland and Miami offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has been the subject of speculation as a top candidate to join the Chiefs. The 36-year-old Daboll worked on the same coaching staff with Crennel for five seasons with New England in the early 2000s.

Daboll was the coordinator for the Browns in 2009 and 2010 and for the Dolphins last season, but Miami recently hired his replacement in Mike Sherman.

“I have not talked to Brian,” Crennel said. “He’s been under contract. I have not asked permission to talk with Brian. I might. We’re going to investigate all avenues.”

No matter the coordinator, Crennel said the Chiefs wouldn’t change their offensive philosophy much from that of former head coach Todd Haley.

“Not tremendously,” Crennel said. “Everybody talks about this offensive system or that offensive system, but generally everybody runs the ball and everybody throws the ball.

“In today’s game you have to be able to do a little bit of everything because you have to be able to adjust your game plan to the strengths and weaknesses of whatever defense you’re going against. If that means you need to go no-huddle, then you need to be able to go no-huddle. If that means playing three tight ends, then you go three tight ends. You need to have those kinds of capabilities offensively. ‘’

Crennel previously indicated he would continue to call the defenses for the Chiefs. He was their coordinator in 2010 and again last season, continuing even after taking over from Haley for the season’s final three games.

“It worked well at the end of the year in the three games that we played,” Crennel said. “I’ve got good coaches, and we had good chemistry. I would like to not change that chemistry. If I can keep those guys together and we can work the way we’ve worked in the past, I think we’ll be a competitive defense and get some things done.”

Calling the defense as a head coach would be a change for Crennel from the way he did things while he was with the Browns. Coaching Cleveland from 2005 through 2008, he had two different defensive coordinators and only in Crennel’s first season did the Browns rank in the NFL’s top half in both scoring and total defense.

“I’m not saying that was a mistake,” Crennel said. “It was a different situation. That was the first time I was a head coach, and there were a lot of things you had to deal with. This time, already having head coaching experience, it’s going to be easier for me to handle. The first time, it would have been much tougher for me to do that.”

Crennel indicated he would like to retain the rest of the defensive coaching staff. The staff includes Anthony Pleasant (defensive line), Gary Gibbs and Adam Zimmer (linebackers), Emmitt Thomas (secondary) and Otis Smith (defensive assistant).

“You never know, but I hope so,” he said. “There are teams out there trying to get a staff together, and they’re always looking for good people. We have a lot of good people on our defensive staff, and I think people took notice. We’re going to try to keep them together, but only time will tell that.”

After a miserable start, the Chiefs quietly turned into one of the league’s better defensive teams in the league. Over the final six games the Chiefs were third in both total defense and scoring defense.

“I would hope we could do that for the whole season,” Crennel said. “We were a little inconsistent last year. We didn’t start (well), and after we started to play a little bit, we hit a lull in the middle for a couple of games and then we got it back together and we finished out pretty consistently.

“That’s what we’re going to shoot for. We’re going to try to start stronger and be consistent all the way through. If we can keep everybody together and everybody healthy, I think we can be a very competitive defense. One of the things we have to do is improve the run defense because we gave up too many yards on the ground.”
