Athletes of the week for Jan. 27
Katie Biggers
• SCHOOL: SM Northwest
• YEAR: Senior
• SPORT: Basketball
The 5-foot-9 guard’s scoring stats weren’t overwhelming. Biggers averaged 10.7 points in three games at the Truman tournament, helping the Cougars to a championship. But she undoubtedly was the engine for SM Northwest, which surged to 9-2 by racking up wins against Lee’s Summit West (66-22), LS North (40-33) and the host Patriots (61-45). Biggers made seven of 12 three-pointers and also kicked in 4.7 assists and 4 rebounds per game. “Katie has really elevated her game this season,” SM Northwest coach Jeff Dickson said. “She does it the right way, with hard work and humility.”
Mason Wedel
• SCHOOL: De Soto
• YEAR: Senior
• SPORT: Basketball
After helping De Soto to a share of its first league title in 27 years last season, what could Wedel do for an encore? Turns out, quite a bit. The senior guard is averaging 21.5 points per game for the Wildcats, who are 10-3 and 4-1 in the Frontier League. More impressive: Wedel finished with 30 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds against Blue Valley Southwest on Saturday as De Soto captured the title at the Tonganoxie tournament. Wedel, who will play at UMKC, was selected tourney MVP and followed that up with 34 points against Wyandotte on Tuesday.
