Before a frenzied crowd, Sion tops St. Teresa’s

Rooting sections for the Storm and St. Teresa’s provide passionate milieu.

The spectacle in the stands dwarfed the basketball game in oh-so-many ways Thursday between visiting St. Teresa’s Academy and Notre Dame de Sion, two of Kansas City’s most prominent all-girls parochial schools.

The atmosphere in the Storm’s gym might best be described as a costume-coordinated Justin Bieber concert: The Sion faithful dressed “incognito,” wearing trench coats and the familiar Groucho glasses , and the Stars’ rowdy rooting section decked out in hunting garb, an underhanded homage to the Storm’s preseason team poster.

But instead of adoring fans with hearts atwitter screeching pop tunes, the opposing fan bases lobbed campy cheers back and forth relentlessly for four quarters.

Of course, far from detracting from the game, which Sion dominated 50-36 behind sophomore Kristen Murphy, the raucous room only made the battle for Catholic-school dominance that much more exciting.

“It’s absolutely crazy, like nothing I’ve ever played in before,” Sion junior Grace Keane said. “You come to other games and there’s probably only 20 fans. Here, there’s 100 on each side and there’s constant screaming. You have to be really focused, because it’s easy to get too hyped up.”

Nerves played a central role in a low-scoring first half by both sides.

“The first couple minutes, you could see in everyone’s eyes they were nervous and felt the jitters in their stomachs because of the crowd and the rivalry,” Murphy said.

The Storm, 10-9, hit the locker room with a 21-15 lead, but the game remained very much in doubt — at least until Murphy and Keane went to work.

The duo combined for 11 points in a 13-1 run to open the third quarter that buried the Stars, who never drew closer than 13 points in the final quarter and a half.

Murphy got her Dwight Howard on, finishing with 20 points and 20 rebounds, according to Storm coach Jared Pitts.

“At first, it was hard to get her to take some shots and take over a game, but we’ve finally got her to really be aggressive especially on the glass,” Pitts said. “She did a great job today, and she’s as good as any when she gets the ball around the glass.”

The game didn’t count for the Fourth Annual Irish Cup, which is an annual contest between the two to benefit Children for Peace in Ireland, so rest assured the gym will be rocking again when Sion, which has won 10 of 14 games after an 0-5 start, makes the return visit to St. Teresa’s on Valentine’s Day.

“This is by far the greatest atmosphere in high school girls’ basketball that I’ve ever been a part of or seen,” Pitts said.

“It’s natural to be a little anxious. I’m nervous, so I’m sure the girls are too, but especially with it being Senior Day and having the crowd and the rival, it’s the one game of any they will remember the most.”
