Every time I go into our bathroom, I flip the switch and wait.
Thats the drawback to my compact fluorescent lights: Theyre energy-efficient, but it takes awhile for them to warm up.Fortunately for fellow impatient people out there, theres a new eco-friendly option in recessed lighting. Vu1 has a bulb in Lowes stores this month that eliminates the wait by turning on instantly. The R30 light bulb, for recessed ceiling cans, uses 19.5 watts to produce the same light as a 65-watt incandescent bulb. While this is still far more wattage used than the typical CFL or LED bulb, it creates a light more typical to incandescents, as opposed to the whiter, sometimes harsh light of other energy-efficient bulbs. The R30 operates using electron stimulated luminescence (ESL) technology, and its mercury free, meaning it can be disposed of safely at home. At $14.98 a bulb, they occupy a middle ground between CFLs and the higher-priced LEDs. The company plans to introduce the classic A-type lamp for U.S. and European consumers later in 2012.
