Settlement reached

A longshore union and a grain terminal operator reached a tentative settlement Monday to end a labor dispute at the Port of Longview in Washington state that included blocked trains and repeated arrests.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has been aggressively protesting the company, EGT, since last year, when EGT decided to use a contractor that staffed a new grain terminal with workers from a different union.

AFL-CIO commercials

The AFL-CIO is launching an advertising campaign to promote unions as a voice for all working people, a move that comes amid declining membership and growing hostility to organized labor in a number of states.

The effort began last week with television commercials in Pittsburgh and Austin, Texas, and will expand to Portland, Ore., and other cities in the coming months, officials said.

Hollywood unions

Two film industry unions are closer to merging.

The Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists have agreed to a plan to combine their unions. Their announcement comes after nine days of talks between the unions in Hollywood and two years of negotiations between the groups to join forces in a bid to gain more leverage in contract negotiations.
