No. 7 KU survives scare from Texas 69-66

Jayhawks let leads get away, then come back and claim a 69-66 victory over Texas.

For a team that has conquered teams ranked second and third, it sounded strange.

“Best win of the year for us,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.

Really? A 69-66 survival against an unranked Texas squad that suffered its seventh loss and is buried in the second division of the Big 12 standings?

“Absolutely,” Self said. “On the road, in a tough place for us, having to come from behind. Best win.”

All of that happened. Seventh-ranked Kansas held 15-point leads in each half, but there the Jayhawks were, trailing 64-60 after J’Covan Brown buried a three-pointer on his way to one of the best poor shooting games you’ll ever see.

Over the next 3 minutes, the Jayhawks made plays on both ends and finished the game on a 9-2 run, remaining undefeated in Big 12 play at 6-0. Kansas, which earlier this season defeated No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Baylor, is 16-3 overall.

“Gut check,” somebody mentioned to Self as he made his way to the postgame interview.

“Exactly,” Self said.

Four different Kansas players scored in that final flurry, and the one who didn’t made the best defensive play.

One of the biggest moments was turned in by Thomas Robinson, who is compiling numbers worthy of postseason honors in both scoring and rebounding. He finished with 17 points and nine boards on Saturday, but this time an assist became his singular moment.

Robinson swept across the lane about 10 feet from the basket, and he could have made a power move. Instead, he spotted Jeff Withey breaking open and found him.

“We work on that,” Robinson said.

The effort paid off in Withey’s basket, which drew a foul. Withey, the team’s best free-throw shooter, knocked it down and KU led 68-66 with 37 seconds remaining.

The sequence followed Travis Releford’s deflection of Brown’s three-point attempt. Brown, who scored 20 of his 24 points after halftime, needed 26 field-goal attempts for his seven baskets. But it seemed every time the ball left his hand it was headed for the net.

“He takes a lot of shots, but makes a lot of shots,” Releford said.

Another Brown miss started a Kansas runout. Releford found Robinson going toward the basket. He missed the layup, but made one of two free throws with 8.8 seconds left.

Brown’s last-ditch three-point try was contested by Justin Wesley, and Kansas sent Texas to its first loss at the Erwin Center in 12 games.

It wouldn’t have happened without a third straight terrific performance from Tyshawn Taylor, who scored 22 points and led the Jayhawks in scoring for a third straight game.

Taylor didn’t commit a turnover for only the second time this year. That also happened in KU’s loss to Kentucky.

Taylor and Elijah Johnson started the KU comeback from four points down with consecutive short jumpers. Taylor was hacked on his shot and completed a three-point play.

“Coach says big-time players make big-time plays, and that’s what I was thinking about,” Taylor said.

Not everything worked for Kansas down the stretch. In one possession, Taylor missed two free throws and Robinson couldn’t convert a stickback.

But the Jayhawks answered with Releford’s block of Brown, who wore the defeat that sent Texas to 12-7 and 2-4 in the Big 12 more than his teammates.

“It starts with me,” Brown said. “I’ve got to finish games better.”
