MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The next chapter in Bryce Brown’s football career will likely unfold in the professional ranks
Brown, a former Kansas State running back, has entered his name in the 2012 NFL draft as an early entrant. He is one of 60 non-senior college players who declared for the draft. If he has not signed with an agent, he has until Wednesday to withdraw his name. Otherwise, he is finished playing college football. Attempts to reach Brown and his family were not successful. Brian Butler, a family friend and former adviser to Brown, did not return text messages and calls seeking comment. Brown is a former standout and top-rated recruit at Wichita East who began his college career at Tennessee, where he rushed for 460 yards as a freshman. Shortly after, he decided to transfer to Kansas State. He sat out the 2010 season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules, and the plan was for him to reunite with his brother, linebacker Arthur Brown, who led K-State with 101 tackles this year, along with being chosen All-Big 12 and the Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year, after transferring from Miami after two seasons and sitting out in 2010. Bryce Brown came into this past season expected to start for the Wildcats, and he was made a preseason All-Big 12 selection by the media. But he only lasted three games in Manhattan. After rushing for 16 yards in three carries, he left the K-State football program and spent the rest of the semester living in Tennessee. His reasons for leaving appeared to revolve around a lack of playing time but were never fully known at the time, and still aren’t today. Brown left the Wildcats without an explanation, and hasn’t spoken publicly with any media outlets since August. At the moment, it appears his next interview will take place with an NFL scout. Brown’s chances of being drafted are unknown. He hasn’t been the main running back in nearly two years, and he contributed little at K-State, but displayed quality speed and agility in scrimmages. If he goes undrafted, the Canadian Football League or the Arena Football League could become possibilities.
