K-State notebook: Irving sits out

First half

Key play: With just more than 11 minutes left, freshman guard Angel Rodriguez pulled down a defensive rebound and finished the possession with a driving layup. Moments later, Rodriguez added back-to-back three-pointers as K-State pulled away with a 15-0 run.

Key stat: K-State made 10 of 18 from three-point range in the half.

Second half

Key play: Rodney McGruder recorded a steal and an emphatic one-handed finish that gave K-State a 60-21 lead and recharged the crowd.

Key stat: Despite allowing a late run, Kansas State held Howard to just 46 points, the lowest total by an opponent this season. The last time K-State held an opponent below 50: Feb. 21, 2009, at Iowa State.

Irving recuperates

Junior guard Martavious Irving sat out Saturday after spraining an ankle at practice Thursday.

•Wildcats freshman Nino Williams of Leavenworth and walk-on guards Brian Rohleder and Shawn Meyer, a Blue Springs South grad, all got to play.
