K-State volleyball buckles down to face Pepperdine

MANHATTAN, Kan. | For the Kansas State volleyball team, the last week has been perhaps the most hectic in program history.

It started last Friday with a monumental victory over No. 2 Nebraska in the second round of the NCAA tournament that brought the Wildcats all kinds of attention. They were honored the next day at K-State’s final home football game and responding to congratulatory emails and text messages all weekend. Then came practices, a lengthy trip to Hawaii and more practices.

All that was fun and wild, but it leads up to a Sweet 16 match at 9 tonight against No. 15 Pepperdine at Hawaii’s Sheriff Center. If they win, the Wildcats will take on the winner of No. 7 Southern California and No. 10 Hawaii at 11 p.m. Saturday for a trip to the NCAA semifinals in San Antonio.

How will the Wildcats move past those thoughts and stay focused on volleyball?

“Do what they do to get them here,” K-State coach Suzie Fritz said. “I don’t think we have the time to all of a sudden reinvent the wheel. We have progressively gotten better, which gives me a sense of tremendous pride as a coach. I just think we need to continue to do what we’ve done to get us to this point.”

The Wildcats used that same businesslike approach leading up to their win over the powerhouse Cornhuskers.

Despite it being arguably the biggest victory in program history, it is now treated like any other match they have played.

“I think you can only talk about a win for so long,” sophomore Kaitlynn Pelger said. “ … We are just excited that we are playing our best volleyball right now.”

Pelger, a sophomore from Olathe South, reached the 20-kill mark against Nebraska. Caitlyn Donahue, a junior from Blue Valley West, reached double digits in both kills and blocks. Sophomore Lilla Porubek and junior Alex Muff have also been solid lately.

They helped K-State reach its third Sweet 16 in program history.

“Our kids were excited about it, but I can’t say they think that is the end for us,” Fritz said of the win over Nebraska. “They came in here as though they wanted to keep playing. I think they’re proud of it, and they should be. They earned the right to be proud of it. But I get the sense it’s one of what we hope is a few more.”
