Royals hire Eiland as pitching coach

Dave Eiland has an easy goal for members of the Royals’ rotation in his new role as the club’s pitching coach: Your work isn’t over until the Fat Lady (or whomever) sings.

“I want all of my starters,” Eiland said, “to still be on the mound when they play, `Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ for the seventh-inning stretch. You do watch pitch counts, but we’re going to be of the mind-set that we’re pitching into the seventh and beyond.”

The Royals used Tuesday’s break in the World Series schedule to announce Eiland’s hiring. The two sides agreed Sunday on a two-year deal but delayed announcement, in accordance with MLB’s preferences, until the Series reached an open date.

Eiland, 45, replaces Bob McClure, who was fired one day after the 2011 season concluded following six years in the job. Eiland served as the Yankees’ pitching coach from 2008-10 before spending last season as a special assistant at Tampa Bay.

“It just felt right,” he said. “The conversations we had, we were on the same page with a lot of things. This is a team that’s going to make some noise as we move forward in the next year or two.”

The Royals interviewed three candidates before choosing Eiland, whose playing career ended in 2002 after undergoing a second Tommy John surgery to repair elbow damage.

“He answered all the criteria that I was looking for,” manager Ned Yost said. “He has a great knowledge of pitching mechanics. He’s very well prepared in terms of formulating game plans.”

Specifically, Yost wanted a pitching coach who had spent extended time in the majors with mediocre stuff – believing such experience sharpened a candidate’s attention to mechanics, preparation and detail.

“My stuff was probably a little bit south of mediocre,” Eiland said. “I had to work really hard every day, year in and year out, just to stick around and have the success I did have.

“Not only did I have to study hitters, I had to study myself, my mechanics and my delivery. I had to be able to make the adjustments I needed to make as the year went on. So, yes, I think that statement describes me pretty well.”

Eiland spent five years as a minor-league pitching coach in the Yankees’ organization prior to becoming their big-league pitching coach. That followed a 10-year playing career that saw him go 12-27 with a 5.74 ERA for the Yankees, Padres and Devil Rays.

Hiring Eiland fills the last vacancy on Yost’s staff.

The Royals previously promoted Chino Cadahia to replace fired bench coach John Gibbons while retaining hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, infield/third base coach Eddie Rodriguez, outfield/first base coach Doug Sisson and bullpen coach Steve Foster.

“We are delighted to have Dave join our coaching staff,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “He is an extremely talented pitching coach and a proven winner who has the ability to relate to the young pitchers who are transitioning to the majors.

“He has also shown effectiveness in working with established pitchers.”

Eiland took a 25-day leave of absence for personal reasons stemming from family issues in June 2010 from his job as the Yankees’ pitching coach. He was fired after the season and joined the Rays as a special assistant to general manager Andrew Friedman.

“It was something that if it happened in the off-season,” Eiland said, “nobody would have known anything about it. It was something I had to take care of. I came home, got everything where it needed to be and moved on.

“All is well, and I couldn’t be happier from a personal or professional standpoint. As I told Ned (on Monday), I wish spring training was starting tomorrow.”
