Outfielder Bubba Starling tested his strained left quadriceps muscle Tuesday by taking regular batting practice and hopes to return to game action before the Instructional League concludes Oct. 21.

“I just talked to a couple of the coaches and told them, `Man, I feel good,’” he said after five rounds of batting practice. “I’ve been out for the last five games, and I’m ready to get back. I’m ready to start playing again.”

Starling suffered the injury last week while lunging for first base in an attempt to beat out a ground ball. He was the club’s first-round pick in the June draft and received a club-record $7.5 million signing bonus to turn down a football scholarship to Nebraska.

Assistant general manager J.J. Picollo said earlier that Starling won’t play until he’s “100 percent without question.” Starling said coaches advised he “take it easy” because the final few games won’t affect his preparation for next season.

“But to me,” Starling said, “I’m out here for a reason. I want to get better, and I think I can do that by playing games. I want to play.”
