The decision by the Royals to clear space Friday for second baseman Johnny Giavotella by optioning just-acquired Yamaico Navarro to Class AAA Omaha stems from a belief that Navarro can be more than a utility player.
He needs to play, manager Ned Yost said. Its hard to evaluate where we are with him. We like what we see, but unless he plays every day, you dont know what he needs to continue to work on what his strengths are, what his weaknesses are. He needs to play so we can find out exactly who he can be. The Royals acquired Navarro, 23, in a trade last Saturday from Boston with minor-league pitcher Kendal Volz in exchange for infielder Mike Aviles. Navarro went three for seven with two walks while starting at third base Wednesday and Thursday in victories over Baltimore. He is batting .250 overall this season with one homer and six RBIs in 18 games. The decision to send Navarro to Omaha leaves the big-league club with second baseman Chris Getz as its default backup infielder.Read more Royals
