It’s only midafternoon, but Kansas City already has broken the Aug. 2 heat record of 104 degrees.
The official temperature was 107 degrees just before 3:30 p.m. at Kansas City International Airport. It was even hotter elsewhere in the area .
“Given how late the the heat has been holding on, it’ll probably be this evening before we know the absolute high for the day,” said Ryan Cutter of the National Weather Service.
Though the official record-keeping location at KCI was registering 107, it was 108 degrees in downtown Kansas City and 109 in Olathe.
There is a 20 percent chance of overnight thunderstorms, Cutter said. A better chance of rain comes on Thursday, which could drop high temperatures into the 90s for the end of the week.
