PHOENIX | Royals rookie reliever Aaron Crow is unlikely to pitch in tonight’s All-Star Game as he recovers from an illness.

Crow told The Star on Tuesday afternoon that he began feeling ill on Sunday night after he arrived in Arizona. He saw a doctor on Monday and received some antibiotics.

“It’s either (strep throat) or a sinus infection,” Crow said. “(The doctor) gave me some medicine and I’m feeling a lot better.”

Still, Crow will be relegated to emergency duty against the National League in the 82nd annual All-Star Game at Chase Field.

Crow said the AL coaches told him he’ll only pitch if the game goes into extra innings or other pitchers exceed their pitch counts. He was still in uniform and took part in pregame festivities on the field.

Crow said he anticipated that he’d be fine when the Royals begin the second half the season on Thursday at Minnesota.

Crow, 24, is making his first All-Star Game appearance after going 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA in 36 appearances before the All-Star break.
