About 18,000 people seeking words of motivational wisdom slowed morning rush-hour traffic and jammed parking lots Tuesday in downtown Kansas City.

They came for a daylong seminar at the Sprint Center, which promised “live and in person” success and leadership advice from nearly a dozen national political, entertainment, business, military and sports figures.

Early-bird reservations for just $1.95 a person or $9.95 for a whole office helped the Get Motivated Business Seminar pack the arena.

The Kansas City lineup and their topics included:

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani on perseverance; comedian Bill Cosby on success; religious leader Robert Schuller on inspiration; training expert Bob Harrison on sales and negotiation; Forbes Inc. CEO Steve Forbes on business skills; former Southwest Airlines CEO Howard Putnam on management; former NFL quarterback Joe Montana on teamwork; retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal on excellence; former Secretary of State Colin Powell on leadership; “America’s Most Wanted” TV show creator John Walsh on achievement; and a “special guest,” former first lady Laura Bush.

Get Motivated Seminars Inc., which organized the event, stages seminars around the country and returns to Kansas City about every two years, according to its media liaison.
