11 Questions about disappointment for Sporting KC

It’s been more than 48 hours since Sporting Kansas City left Seattle’s Jeff Parke unmarked on a set-piece in stoppage time and lost a game they should’ve drawn.

I’ve still got a few questions. (As a bit of housekeeping, the 11 Questions will now come out on Tuesdays due to a scheduling quirk.)

1. Is there anything more disappointing than a 1-0 loss in stoppage time?
Well, yes. Here are a few things that are more disappointing:

• Getting relegated in the last 10 minutes of the season. See, Birmingham City.
• Metallica's output post Black album
• Robert de Niro's career choices after Heat
• The 2011 NCAA college basketball final
• New Coke
• Iron Man 2
• Chinese Democracy
• Larry Johnson’s reign as an elite NFL running back
• The 2006 World Cup for the United States
• Leaving your lights on in your car during an 8-hour workday
• Meeting Sylvester Stallone in person
• Most "fake" twitter account
• MySpace
• The four El Clasico's this Spring

I’m sure there are more, I was just spitballing.

2. Did Sporting KC play better in Seattle?
It was obvious that Peter Vermes went into this game with a slightly different gameplan, one that tightened up the backline and played a little more cautiously in the press. The team responded and, for the most part, did everything they could to earn a 0-0 draw.

3. Is the offense broken?
I reserve judgment on this one for another game or two. Only because it was the first action Omar Bravo had seen in three months and it was Ryan Smith’s first start of the year. Give those two some more time with Teal Bunbury and Kei Kamara, and I’m sure that things will click into place again.

Thanks to the lack of a Gold Cup call-up, Bunbury will have plenty of time to shake off the funk he’s in.

4. What will it take to get a win for KC?
There are very few instances where I'd resort to bribery -- to bail myself out of a Mexican prison or maybe to pay for M. Night Shymalan to stop making movies are the only two that come to mind -- but given KC's luck it might be there only way to catch a break this season.

5. Has Vermes found his best XI?
As much as I love Stephane Auvray (I’m a card-carrying member of the Committee That Wants Stephane Auvray To Play Defensive Midfield For Sporting Kansas City and is Willing To Resort to Goofy Satire to Make His Point.)

6. Should that same XI start against New England in the Open Cup?
Absolutely. As James Starritt and I talked about in the latest Stoppage Time podcast, consistency breeds confidence. And, as an addendum, I think confidence breeds creativity.

Creativity is something KC really desperately needs right now. Do it Vermes. Do it.

7. Man of the match?
Defender Matt Besler. After the horror-show that was Aurelien Collin and Julio Cesar last week in Los Angeles, something needed to happen. That something turned out to be giving Besler back the starting job he shouldn't have lost. He is more than just a tougher player this year, he also knows when to step up into a tackle and is showing more confidence on the ball than ever.

Really, there aren't that many options. Craig Rocastle? Davy Arnaud? Collin? Kei Kamara?

8. How did the first-time ref do?
It probably never gets said, but I think Geoff Gamble did all right in his first MLS game. He controlled the action without completely taking over the action and bungling calls to make himself the show. It's like he's never watched an MLS referee before. Maybe the league should only let first-time refs work.

9. Can they please find a permanent replacement for Sasha Victorine soon?
While I didn't agree with his stance on hair styles and beards, I didn't really hate Cliff McCrath with Callum Williams on Sunday. But I didn't particularly love him either. There have been three different announcers since Sasha Victorine stepped out of the booth. Like with the team, I just want a little bit of consistency. Consistency will mean better coverage.

Though, if you get right down to it, I just want to listen to someone who knows Sporting and can talk about Sporting without sifting through the game notes.

10. What happens first: Fredy Montero wins a fair play award or Sporting scores from a corner?
I say Montero. KC is going on something like 40 games without a goal from a corner kick. Matt Besler's goal against Chicago comes close, but it was resulted from a short corner and cross.

11. If you could pick out one cheesy song from the 80s to use as a slightly convoluted metaphor for Sporting Kansas City, what would it be?
"Patience" by Guns N Roses. Even the inclusion of the calm and intelligent passing of Rocastle couldn't stop KC from playing Route 1 football occasionally. And, as has been the case the last 4 games, it didn't work. Like, at all.

It's probably best not to think of which player would be playing the role of Slash in this video with the giant snake. Could get slightly weird.
