Sporting Kansas City’s roster, as of right now

More News

The last preseason games are in the can, the season is on the horizon... and Sporting Kansas City still has a few unresolved roster issues before the season starts.

Not as many as some teams, but there are two players (Julio Cesar Santos Correa and Milos Stojcev) who are expected to sign this week while the team trials another defender and hunts for the elusive max-contract European midfielder. (Team president Robb Heineman tweeted as much earlier this week.)

Originally, I intended this post to be a breakdown of the roster as per the new MLS roster regulations. However, not knowing the precise contract details of KC’s new players (and soon to be new players), that is not possible at this juncture. The MLS player’s association will release contract details after the season starts, maybe then we can take a realistic (and super nerdy) look at the roster.

Until then, here’s the current construction of KC’s roster -- with the inclusion of two players who haven’t officially signed but will be.

Players Under Contract: 24 (+2 who soon should be)

Goalkeepers: 3
Jon Kempin (HG)
Eric Kronberg
Jimmy Nielsen (INT)

Defenders: 9
Matt Besler
*Julio Cesar Santos Correa
Kevin Ellis (HG)
Roger Espinoza
Michael Harrington
Mike Jones
Scott Lorenz
Luke Sassano
Shavar Thomas

Midfielders: 8
Korede Aiyegbusi (INT)
Davy Arnaud
Stephane Auvray
Chance Myers
Craig Rocastle (INT)
*Milos Stojcev (INT)
Graham Zusi
Konrad Warzycha (IR)

Forwards/Wingers: 6
Omar Bravo (DP/INT)
Teal Bunbury (GA)
Birahim Diop
Kei Kamara
C.J. Sapong
Ryan Smith (INT)

HG: Home Grown, INT: International Player, GA: Generation adidas, DP: Designated Player, IR: Will begin season on long-term injured reserve, *:Contract not signed, but likely coming.

Trialists

Judging by the last four pre-season matches, there are a few trialists left: Defender Omar Colley, midfielder Michal Mravec and midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic. There’s of course the always popular Trialist No. 1 (who made an appearance at outside back during Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake).

Which would lead me to believe that winger Adda Djeziri has joined Sheldon Bateau, Daneil Cyrus, Travis Bowen and Gor Kirakosyan as former Sporting KC trialists.
