One of the most eventful years in Kansas City’s soccer history is sadly coming to a close. An English giant came to town (and left defeated). The city became a flashpoint for World Cup hysteria. Ground was broken on a new stadium. The team has a new name and a new designated player.
I could go on, but I might actually spoil the rest of this list. Here are, as determined by The Full 90, the Best Kansas City Soccer Moments in 2010. But first, some things you won’t be seeing. The honorable mention: Roger Espinoza earning a World Cup cap for Honduras … Kei Kamara’s goal against Philadelphia to break a two-month funk … The first time KC saw Ryan Smith on the ball in an MLS game … Kamara’s feud with former KC defender Nick Garcia on Twitter … The end of the line for CommunityAmerica Ballpark … The establishment of this blog, The Kansas City Star’s first soccer-specific blog.**God bless the few of you readers who actually included that in your emails/comments. You’ve given my ego a post-holiday boost that should last until at least President’s Day.10. Return of the Comets
It might not be the “Kansas City” Comets... and they might not play at Kemper anymore... and they might play in a league with only five teams... and the team isn't off to a great start, just 1-5 so far... and the luster of indoor soccer may have faded a bit... but those “hot winter nights” are back in Kansas City. Erm, Independence. The team plays tonight at the Independence Events Center against the Baltimore Blast. If only because I was able to find this video am I glad the Comets are back in town.9. A trophy for some local ladies
It might not have registered in the mainstream KC media -- heck, it barely registered here on The Star’s soccer-specific blog-type thing until the Final Four -- but five Kansas City ladies were a part of the Notre Dame side that won the NCAA Women’s College Cup.
