FIRST QUARTER
Key play: Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing hit Dezmon Briscoe for a 7-yard touchdown pass that gave KU a 7-0 lead.
Key stat: Reesing passed for 162 yards.
SECOND QUARTER
Key play: Briscoe fumbled to Missouri’s Carl Gettis at the KU 25, and Gettis returned it to the KU 5. MU would punch it in on a Derrick Washington 1-yard run that pulled the Tigers within 14-10.
Key stat: Missouri converted on one of seven third downs.
THIRD QUARTER
Key play: Blaine Gabbert hit Danario Alexander for a 68-yard touchdown pass that gave MU its first lead at 33-28.
Key stat: Missouri racked up 285 total yards in the third quarter alone.
FOURTH QUARTER
Key play: Reesing was sacked for a safety trying to run a quarterback draw out of the end zone. MU pulled to within 39-38 and got the ball back with great field position.
Key stat: All five punts by MU punter Jake Harry were planted inside the KU 20.
Player of the game: Reesing. He connected on 37 of 55 passes for a school-record 498 yards and four touchdowns.
Reason to hope: For next season, the KU offensive line turned into a very competent unit and all five starters return.
Reason to mope: The Todd Reesing era is now over, leaving unknowns Kale Pick and Jordan Webb to battle for the starting job.
Looking ahead: KU coach Mark Mangino said that the investigation into his treatment of players should be completed “soon.” He said he expects he will be the coach next season.
| A | Offense | The Jayhawks finally looked like the group that was publicized to be the best offense in school history in the preseason. Aside from some untimely turnovers, KU should be proud of how it finished the season. |
| D | Defense | There simply wasn’t enough depth to play with Missouri for four quarters, especially in the secondary, where the Jayhawks were without an injured Lubbock Smith. Phil Strozier struggled greatly in his absence. |
| D | Special teams | Several times, KU’s punt return men did not field punts and allowed the ball to roll inside their own 5. The Jayhawks couldn’t get anything going in their kickoff return game after showing promise against Texas. |
| B | Coaching | Mangino had the Jayhawks playing hard until the last second, which is no surprise given the way his teams have always competed. KU had a tremendous offensive game plan and put itself in position to pull another upset over the Tigers. |
