When we saw the first photos of the new First Dog, Bo, we knew it wouldnt take long for the haters to come out, fangs bared.

But you said you were going to adopt a dog.

Yes, thats what President Obama said.

Bo is a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog, a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy. Bo had originally lived with another family but didnt get along with the other dogs. The family gave him back to the Kennedys, and Kennedy in turn gifted him to Malia and Sasha Obama.

Technically, I think that makes Bo a rescue. Or maybe secondhand. Im not sure.

Yes, it would have been a lovely gesture for the Obamas to have set (yet another) example.

But big-picture here. Bo is going to make two little girls very, very happy. And in the end, thats what really matters.

And my suggestion to the whiners: Put your money where your mouth is and make a donation to your local animal shelter. Or better yet, rescue one of those cuties yourself.
