No kid wants to admit to the “naughty” label — not this time of year.

Anyway, it’s such an up-or-down kind of question. Naughty or nice? What, no gray area?

We asked youngsters recently about their overall naughtiness or niceness, but then we had a few follow-up questions. Turns out few kids, even this time of year, will claim unerring niceness.

Among brothers and sisters, for instance, filching candy seems to be a common misbehavior. General sibling torment is up there. And then there’s the occasional outburst directed at a parent.

Here are excerpts from our conversations at Crown Center. For their honesty, participants got to reach into our red backpack and pull out a toy.

DENG YOR, 10, Olathe

Naughty or nice this year?

Both.

Scale of 1 to 5?

Three.

Tell me one nice thing you did this year.

I helped out my neighbor — she’s a senior citizen — with her trash in the morning.

What about a naughty thing?

I took some candy from my sister, and she cried.

Did you feel bad?

Yeah.

Do you have any advice for kids next year?

Santa’s always watching you.

So next year, are you going to be a 3 again, or maybe a 4?

A five!

KELSEY BANE, 9, Topeka

So have you been naughty or nice?

Nice.

Scale of 1 to 5?

Five.

Wow. Good job. So tell me something nice you did this year.

Help my sister clean the kitchen.

Tell me something naughty you did.

Nothing.

Do you want some suggestions? Did you ever yell at your mom?

No.

Did you ever forget to do your homework?

No.

Your room is always perfectly clean?

Yeah.

You are good! Did you ever yell at your sister?

I do that all the time.

Any advice for kids about how to be nice, because you’re pretty good at it?

I would tell them not to hit your sister or be mean to anybody, and help them out.

GEORGIA KUNTZ, 3, Kansas City

Have you been a good girl?

Mom: Say yes.

Yes.

Do you remember something nice you did?

I sat on his lap.

On Santa’s lap. Did you cry?

Shakes head no.

That’s a good girl. Do you share your toys with your little sister?

Yeah.

Have you done anything naughty this year?

Shakes head no

Not one thing? Do you put your toys away?

Nods.

What did you ask Santa to bring you?

A toy unicorn!

SAVANNAH LEACH, 10, Merriam

Tell me if you’ve been naughty or nice this year.

I’ve been nice.

On a scale of 1 to 5, where are you?

Four.

Some friends here seem to disagree. Tell me something nice you did this year.

Silence.

You can think of one thing, you’re a 4!

I went outside to play with my friend when I didn’t want to, but I did.

Tell me something naughty you did.

I kicked my little sister out of my room.

That wasn’t too nice. What was she doing?

She kept on talking when I was trying to read.

She kind of deserved it, huh? Do you have any advice for anybody next year? What about something they should avoid doing?

Get bad grades.
