It’s a safe bet that KC’s downtown area has more live theater than you’re used to.

•The classiest new venue, theCopaken Stage, unfortunately will be dark during the Big 12. The play, “Gee’s Bend,” begins performances March 28.

Crown Center Shops at Grand Boulevard and Pershing Road — maybe a 10-minute walk south from Sprint Center — is home to three theaters:

The American Heartland Theatre, on the third level of the mall, is presenting a PG-13 musical love story, “I Love You Because.” The show runs through April 20. Performances are scheduled at 7:30 Thursdau; 8 p.m. Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $24-$33.50. Call 842-9999 or go to ahtkc.com.

The Coterie Theatre, on the lower level, is producing “A Separate Peace,” based on the John Knowles novel. The play targets a teen audience and tells the story of complicated relationships at a private school in New Hampshire during World War II. It runs through March 22. Performances: 10 a.m. and noon Thursday; 10 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. Friday; 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $9-$14. Call 816-474-6552 or go to coterietheatre.org.

•Eubank Productions presents the R-rated rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” at the Off Center Theatre on the third floor of the shops. Performances: 8 and 9:45 p.m. Friday; 8 and 11 p.m. Saturday; 7 and 8:45 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $12-$18. Call 816-842-9999 or visit eubankproductions.com.

•Crown Center is connected by an elevated walkway to Union Station, where Theatre for Young America is presenting the children’s show Miss Nelson Has a Field Day,” with performances at 10 a.m. and noon Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. Quality Hill Playhouse, 303 W. 10th St., is presenting the musical revue of songs by women, “Sing Out, Sister!” Performances are at 1 and 8 p.m. today, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 and 8 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $24. Call 816-421-1700 or visit qualityhillplayhouse.com.
