After a decade on the Country Club Plaza, Bang & Olufsen plans to relocate in early 2010.

The retailer of luxury televisions and music systems is moving to 1901 Main St., in the Crossroads Arts District.

Officials with Plaza landlord Highwoods Properties had no comment. But shop owner Kirk Patton said the reasons for the relocation are “manifold.”

“In 1999 people would come to a place like the Plaza to be introduced to a luxury brand,” he said. “That has changed. Now you are seeing less and less of that kind of business, and fewer and fewer of those kind of customers.”

It is mostly locally owned Plaza retailers such as Scandia Down, Halls and Tivol that still offer the “true luxury experience,” he said.

Because his shop at 4740 Pennsylvania Ave. is mostly surrounded by national retailers, consumers also conclude it is a corporate store, Patton said. He called his store an independently owned dealership.

“The Crossroads has diversity in ownership, diversity in management, and I will have a local landlord,” he said.

Local commercial property developer Diane Botwin owns the building at the southeast corner of 19th and Main streets.

Bang & Olufsen has two full-time employees, a master electrician, and Beo, a 3-month-old kitten found by Plaza electricians working on the holiday lights.

Beo is now the store’s official greeter.

“We have business cards on the way for her,” Patton said.

Question time

Answers to reader questions:

What is going in …

•The former Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon space in Overland Park?

Five Guys Burgers and Fries took most of the building at 12025 Metcalf Ave. and opened Monday. A 1,760-square-foot space is available for lease on the north end. Lone Star closed that restaurant and 25 others in early 2008.

Five Guys is known for its hand-patted hamburgers, fresh-cut fries and made-to-order menu.

•The former Opal’s Kitchen space?

Jenn and Mark “Rhythm” Piatt will open Rhythm & Booze at 423 Southwest Blvd. in early December. The operation will serve salads, soups, cheeseburger pie, chicken and spinach enchiladas, chicken fried steak, and cheese tortellini with roasted red pepper sauce.

Mark Piatt earned the nickname Rhythm because he had none, jokes his wife. Both have been in the restaurant business for about 15 years.

•Betty’s Family Dining in Blue Springs?

Barbecue award winner Terry Kopp of Kansas City Rib Co. leased the Blue Springs institution in March, but it has been tied up in an estate. Still, he put in new equipment and “spiffed” it up a bit. He hopes to open later this month under Betty’s Family Restaurant/Kansas City Rib Co. with Betty’s signature giant pork tenderloins and colossal batter-dipped onion rings, fried chicken and Betty’s Burger Challenge (a dozen half-pound patties and 3 pounds of French fries) — free if customers eat it within an hour.

The restaurant, at 1428 S.W. U.S. 40, also will serve some of Kopp’s signature barbecue. A 2007 Kansas City Star review said: “high-quality products, lovingly smoked, rubbed, sliced and/or pulled … melt-in-the-mouth texture and deep smoky flavor.”

•The LaFuente Mexican Restaurant space in Overland Park?

The locally owned Frida’s Contemporary Mexican Cuisine is scheduled to open by the end of the month at 14861 Metcalf Ave.

“Real Mexican food is lean, light and full of flavor. It’s not greasy, not cheesy, not fried,” said partner Victor Esqueda, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico.
