When locally owned Ingredient was looking to open a fourth location, it liked a spot that was across the street — but not in — the Kansas City Power & Light District.
“More of the office workers are coming from the epicenter at 12th and Main, where we are, and north … so we’re a great option for them,” said Steve Kerner, who heads the local investment group behind Ingredient.
The gourmet fast-casual operation at 1111 Main St., which opened Monday, has customizable salads, pizzas, sandwiches, wraps and four daily soups. It offers breakfast, lunch and dinner from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The company plans a January opening for a Country Club Plaza location at 4807 Jefferson St., former home of Meiners Plaza Market. It also has locations in Lawrence (the original location opening in mid 2007), Leawood and Columbia.
Ingredient is very similar to The Mixx — from its concept of made-to-order behind a glass-fronted counter to its one-page menus — but they are separate companies. The Mixx, which opened in late 2005, has locations just south of the Plaza and in the Power & Light District.
“We both have salads, but that’s where the similarities end,” Kerner said.
Jo Marie Scaglia, owner of The Mixx, declined to comment.
At Park Place
Leawood’s Park Place will have three new tenants:
•Bella B’s Boutique and Bella Bambino — sister stores — will open at 11555 Ash St. on Nov. 19.
Bella B’s is relocating from Overland Park. It sells trendy clothing and accessories. Bella Bambino is a new store that will sell “rocker mom” maternity wear and trendy children’s clothing in limited quantities.
•Cupcake A La Mode, a cupcake cafe offering 20 flavors of cupcakes, along with coffees and teas, will open at 11529 Ash St. in late December. There also is a location west of the Country Club Plaza.
At Zona Rosa
Zona Rosa, at the northwest corner of Barry Road and Interstate 29, has several new retailers open or opening just in time for the holidays:
•Bounce House, 8610 N. Dixson Ave., is a child play center featuring inflatable slides, jumpers, and obstacle courses. It has an open-play format, meaning no appointments are necessary. Families also can reserve a private party room for an event.
•Calendar Club/Go Toys & Games has opened a temporary location at 7200 N.W. 86th Terrace. Next spring that space will be home to the locally owned 54th Street Grill & Bar, which features “American casual cuisine” for lunch and dinner. It will relocate its Barry Road restaurant, which will remain open until just before the move.
•Decori, now open at 7360 N.W. 87th Terrace, sells holiday and home decor items and gifts, including candles, soaps, a hand-sculpted Santa Claus by a local artist, and fairies by California artist Mark Roberts, who will be at the store Nov. 22 to sign some of his works. Also, Constant Cravings will open inside Decori by the end of the month. It will sell coffee, espresso, fudge, glazed nuts, truffles and more.
•Rocketbox Photography Studio & Gallery, now open at 8677 N. Winter Ave., is a full-service photography studio that specializes in senior and family portraits.
•Select Comfort will open in November at 7300 N.W. 87th Terrace. The company sells mattresses, pillows, blankets, bedding, mattress pads and other bedding accessories.
•Skin Deep Aesthetics, now open at 7400 N.W. 87th Terrace, carries medical-grade skin care products and specializes in advanced age intervention procedures.
•Sports Fanatic will open in November at 8630 N. Dixson Ave. It will sell sportswear, sports memorabilia and merchandise.
•Time N Style will open in early November at 7311 N.W. 86th Terrace. It will sell unique watches, jewelry and accessory pieces.
•Vintage Stock opened Saturday at 8500 N.W. Prairie View Road. The entertainment superstore has movies, music and video games, along with vintage toys, vinyl records and comic books, that customers can buy, sell and trade.
Coming soon
The long-awaited replacement for the Double Dragon restaurant is about to debut.
Area restaurateur Blair Hurst plans to open Jack Gage American Tavern at 5031 Main St. in early November.
Hurst took over the space more than 2½ years ago. He was going to license an English pub concept but went with his own ideas, playing off a little family boxing history.
