Standees in Prairie Village combines upscale restaurant, movie theaters

The neighborhood movie theater may be making a comeback in a new combination of theaters and upscale restaurant under one roof. Standees-The Entertaining Eatery will open to the public May 24 in the Village shopping center in Prairie Village. The owners hope to expand to other markets in the Kansas City area and the region.

New Overland Park sushi, steak grill to open

Liang Dong Guo, who owns China Buffet in Olathe, is opening Pacific Buffet Sushi Steak & Grill with his son, Shengkai Guo. It is scheduled to open Wednesday at 8725 Metcalf Ave., serving appetizers, soups and salads, sushi and sashimi a la carte, signature rolls, and sushi bar entrees, fried rice and lo mein.

New Overland Park sports bar is going to extremes

Overtime Sports Bar & Grill plans an early June opening on 135th Street. It will have 42 beers on tap, including 10 Boulevard Brewing Co. beers and at least four from Free State Brewing Co., as well as more than 100 different bottled beers.

Boulevard Brewing Co. teams up with Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

The first commercial collaboration between Boulevard Brewing Co. and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. will hit store shelves in mid-June. Terra Incognita - or unknown lands - was originally brewed in very limited quantities for patrons of SAVOR, a Brewers Association event held in June 2012 in Washington D.C. It was so well received that the two companies decided to bring it back.

Boulevard Brewing launches new charity program

A portion of the sales of Boulevard Brewing Co.’s popular pilsner will soon benefit local charities. Under the new “10% for KC” program, the brewery will donate 10 percent of sales of its KC Pils each quarter to three different charities.

Crown Center to lose three retailers, gain one

Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works plan to close later this month in Crown Center. The locally owned Sage & Daisy, another bath and body shop, also plans to close May 26. In other Crown Center news, Juice Stop is scheduled to open in the center later this month.

Kansas City barista Pete Licata brews up a winning reputation

The quality assurance manager at Parisi Artisan Coffee won the U.S. Barista Championship in Boston in mid-April, earning an all-expenses-paid trip to the world matchup in Australia later this month. There he will represent the United States against coffee competitors from at least 50 countries.

Award-winning chef Debbie Gold joins new restaurant company

James Beard award-winning chef Debbie Gold is back at the corner of 119th and Roe with another new restaurant concept — this one in Leawood. Gold was a founder of the famed 40 Sardines restaurant on the Overland before rejoining The American Restaurant in Crown Center. But she has been wooed back south, becoming the third partner in a new restaurant group called Red Door Restaurants.

Kansas City Restaurant Week raised a record $150K for local charities

The 2013 Kansas City Restaurant Week had a record-breaking season, including raising more than $150,000 for local charities. More than 126 restaurants also participated - the highest number in the event’s four year history. “We are proud just to see the tremendous growth and the participation by the community,” said Zach Doerfler, president of the Greater Kansas City Restaurant Association.

Westport’s Corner Restaurant opens

The Westport mainstay closed more than three years ago. But new owners, Michael Pfeifer and Dawn Slaughter, took over the space late last year. They've spent the last months remodeling the restaurant at 4059 Broadway, giving it an "industrial farmhouse" decor.
