Victory tastes sweet to Grubnic

David Grubnic hadn’t visited the winner’s circle in a drag-racing lifetime — 2,254 days.

His last win came March 19, 2006, at the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., but Grubnic erased more than six years of frustration (or at least tempered it) with a Top-Fuel championship Sunday during the Dollar General NHRA Summernationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

“Obviously, it’s been a long time between drinks,” said Grubnic, a native of Brisbane, Australia. “That’s not from not trying. We come out every weekend and our goal is to win, so to go that far without winning, it starts to affect you. But you still believe. You never stop believing.”

Still, winning again felt unbelievable.
