EKL training camp day 5
By TEREZ A. PAYLOR The Kansas City Star
Just one year after fielding one of the most dominant teams in recent Kansas high school football history, the Blue Valley Tigers certainly learned that success can be fleeting.
Yes, the 2007 season was unkind to the Tigers, who went 4-5 after going 14-0 in 2006. But if one thing is already clear about the coming season, it’s this - the Tigers have already turned the page on last year.
"Last year has nothing to do with this year," coach Steve Rampy said.
Several players said the same thing. Don’t act like you’re surprised - the Tigers have plenty of reason for optimism. While last year’s group had exactly one returning starter from the 2006 state championship team, the Tigers have about 15 returning starters this year.
And more important, it seems like the quarterback situation may finally be settled. Senior Tanner Purdon and junior Anthony Abenoja each split time at the quarterback position last season, with neither completely asserting himself as "The Guy." Well, according to several players and coaches, that’s changed this offseason. Coach Steve Rampy said Purdon had a terrific summer and expects him to win the job.
Whoever quarterbacks the Tigers will get to operate behind one of the biggest high school offensive lines in Kansas. Offensive tackle Ryan Miller is listed at 6-4, 340, while guard Lance Culver isn’t too far behind. With those two lined up next to each other, expect Blue Valley to run the ball early and often.
If the offense can start purring again (sorry for the pun), look for a defense that was solid last year to benefit from it. And if that happens, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Tigers win the East Kansas League.
For Wednesday: Blue Valley Northwest looks to continue its winning tradition.
