Athletes display skills at Greg Williams agility event

Gregg Williams remembers the summer training program for football at Excelsior Springs when he was in high school.
“There was an old universal weight machine, and that hardly was used at all,” he said.
Times have changed since Williams played for current Excelsior Springs coach Sam Brown in the 1970s. Brown now leads a summer weight and agility program for Tiger athletes, which reached its midway point Tuesday. Williams now is the assistant head coach/defense for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League.
More than 50 Excelsior Springs athletes participated in a series of weight and agility tests ranging from the 40-yard dash to the long jump tested by the Athletic Rehabilitation Center. The tests Tuesday morning served as an opportunity for the athletes to see their progress in the first four weeks of the summer conditioning program before starting the final four weeks.
“All of our kids had an opportunity to be professionally tested,” Brown said. “We see what our kids can do in July, and then we’ll see what they can do again before the season starts.”
The testing, which Williams was on hand for, served as the kickoff for Gregg Williams week in Excelsior Springs. Other events included a 7-on-7 football tournament and lineman’s challenge Tuesday afternoon. Williams will be the host of a coaching clinic today followed by a Hall of Fame induction.
Other events include an auction Thursday and a golf tournament Friday. Items in this year’s auction range from autographed LeBron James items to a guitar signed by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
The theme for this week’s events is “If you can, you should.”
Williams applied that theme to the Excelsior Springs athletes.
“If you can go out and represent your school with your talents, you should,” Williams told the athletes.
