SM West's Howard picks Oklahoma State

Shawnee Mission West basketball player Heather Howard has verbally committed to Oklahoma State.

Howard, who averaged 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks a game as a junior post player last season, received the scholarship offer after performing well at a basketball camp at Oklahoma State with her Shawnee Mission West teammates in mid-June.

“She played unbelievable,” said Shawnee Mission West girls basketball coach Mark Rabbitt. “Every time I turned around I had an Oklahoma State coach asking me questions about her.”

Howard’s performance during the three-day camp was so good that the Oklahoma State coaches asked her to stay a little longer so she could compete in another camp that featured tougher competition. She did well again and they offered her a scholarship before she returned home. Howard took an official visit to the campus a few days later and committed.

“I really like the coaches, and the program and campus is really cool,” Howard said.

With the recruiting process out of the way, Howard — who can sign her letter of intent in November — wants to focus on helping the Vikings build on their success last season, when they finished 16-7 and qualified for the 6A state tournament.

“(Now) I don’t have to worry about recruiting or anything like that,” Howard said. “We want to make it to state and hopefully win it.”
