Addition to all-star roster selected Missouri MVP

How’s this for irony? Lee’s Summit High School quarterback Andrew Schnell’s name originally did not appear on the roster for last week’s Metro All-Star Challenge football game. However, it was Schnell who won the most valuable player award for the Missouri squad.

The Missouri all-stars lost to the Kansas squad 20-9 in the game at the Blue Valley District Activities Center, but Schnell — who did not start the game — threw for 146 yards and a touchdown.

“We lost and everything,” Schnell said. “I was disappointed, but I was happy because the whole experience was awesome.”

The all-star game attracted 90 of the top graduated seniors in the Kansas City area, but several of the expected players could not participate. So when Harrisonville quarterback Sean Ransburg could not play, Missouri coach Greg Oder called Schnell on the morning of the second all-star practice and asked him if he could be there in an hour.

During the game, Schnell turned to an old friend — former Pop Warner teammate Nathan Paddock of Lee’s Summit West — and threw him a 21-yard touchdown pass.

“It’s kind of ironic. We used to play kids ball (together),” Schnell said. “I used to play tight end and he used to be quarterback.”

Despite Missouri’s fourth-quarter touchdown, the team struggled against the Kansas defense. The Missouri team had four turnovers throughout the game. Even so, Missouri produced some highlights.

Oder featured his former Blue Springs South running back Donte Strickland in the shotgun formation to start the game and the plan worked for early first downs. Park Hill free safety Patrick Lewis’ interception set up Missouri’s first score, which pulled Raymore-Peculiar’s Sean Middleton onto the field to make a 27-yard field goal.
