Forward Jay Couisnard, a transfer from Evansville, can score inside and outside. The Kangaroos will need his versatility.
First challenge
If all goes well, the Kangaroos will take a 3-0 record to Nebraska on Nov. 24. As lousy as last season was, UMKC did get its act together early for a signature victory at Wichita State. Perhaps the Roos can sneak up on the Cornhuskers.
End game
It has to be better than last year, a 7-24 record, which was the worst in the program’s Division I history. UMKC hasn’t had a winning conference record since 2006 or a winning overall record since 2005. But the big drought is the NCAA Tournament. That’s never happened.
WOMEN
Probable starters
| P | No. | Player | Ht. | Yr. | PPG |
| F | 55 | Kaycie Boyles | 5-11 | Fr. | 0.0 |
| F | 32 | Jade Tinner | 6-0 | So. | 5.4 |
| G | 2 | Heather Davis | 5-7 | So. | 4.9 |
| G | 4 | LeAndre Thomas | 5-6 | So. | 6.3 |
| G | 11 | Chazny Morris | 5-10 | Sr. | 17.5 |
Chazny Morris is the best talent in the Summit, a player to build around. The do-everything senior guard is coming off a season in which she averaged 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds. She ranked in the league’s top 10 in several other categories. She’s a 41 percent shooter from three.
First challenge
Becoming better on defense. The Roos ranked near the bottom of the Summit last season in points allowed and field-goal percentage defense.
End game
No question about the conference favorite. South Dakota State returns four starters from a 32-3 team that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The schedule isn’t friendly — the Roos leave Swinney after a Nov. 19 game and don’t return until Jan. 4. But Whitaker thinks this is the best team in her four years, one capable of inching up the Summit standings. No matter what happens, this will be Whitaker’s most memorable season. She’s expecting her first child in December.
