What’s at stakeIf Oklahoma State upsets the Tigers, the Cowboys will vault into the nation’s top 10. Missouri is ranked No. 3, so this one is more about staying undefeated and strengthening the position as the favorites to win the Big 12 North and set up a game against No. 1 Oklahoma.
Cheers if …
Missouri wins any way it can. This is not about having to win big to impress anyone. Oklahoma State is a ranked foe and the No. 3 scoring team in college football.
Jeers if …
Missouri does not take advantage of a sellout crowd or cooperates in its own demise by special-teams coverage mistakes or turnovers. MU can afford a loss, but not a giveaway.
Three things about Oklahoma State
1 Tight end Brandon Pettigrew has missed two games because of a foot injury. Whether you agree with the choice of Big 12 coaches last season of Pettigrew over Missouri’s Martin Rucker as the All-Big 12 tight end, Pettigrew would be a big missing-in-action for the Cowboys. Especially with Chase Coffman, the most productive tight end in the Big 12, out there for Missouri.
2 Oklahoma State’s rushing game rolled up 215 yards Saturday against Texas A&M, but the Cowboys ran for only 65 yards in the first half. That should set up an interesting start against a Missouri team that is 15th nationally against the run, yielding only 95 yards a game.
3 Ugo Chinasa and Patrick Lavine each returned interceptions for touchdowns against Texas A&M. Chinasa also returned a fumble 35 yards for a TD.
Key matchup
Missouri’s defensive front against the Oklahoma State running game. No matter how problematic MU’s secondary play has been, the Tigers cannot allow the Cowboys to get their running game in a grove. MU wants Oklahoma State to pass to cut into the Cowboys’ normal dominance on time of possession. The MU offense can’t score without the ball.
Mike DeArmond’s pick: Missouri 52-35
Both these teams can and will score. The difference will be the team that fails to answer score for score every time. The bet here is that will be Oklahoma State as the Tigers force at least one punt in the first half and another in the second.
