Tigers roar past SEMO 52-3

COLUMBIA | It wasn’t quite as bad as Sarah Washington predicted.

In a pre-game radio interview with KFRU-AM in Columbia, the mother of Missouri star tailback Derek Washington said the Tigers would win “probably 65-0.”

How bad was it really?

Well, Mizzou beat Southeast Missouri State 52-3 on Saturday night.

Out manned, the Redhawks, 1-1, from Cape Girardeau had to be thankful MU coach Gary Pinkel pulled most of his offensive stars late in the first half.

Quarterback Chase Daniel, Washington, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and tight end Chase Coffman all had called it a night with still four minutes left in a first half the Tigers led 42-0.

In fact, Missouri, 2-0, maxed out that advantage with 8 minutes, 45 seconds still left in the first half when linebacker Sean Weatherspoon returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown.

One of the most lopsided games in Missouri football history, the magnitude of triumph could have set all sorts of school records.

Out there quivering to be broken was the school record of 69 points Missouri scored against Kansas in 1969.

Then there was the biggest margin of victory in MU history, 60 points in a 60-0 victory over Centre (Ky.) in 1928.

The Tigers just missed setting a school record for most points scored in a half, the 45 points Missouri scored in the second half against San Diego State in 1979.

The fact those records did not fall was to the credit of Pinkel, who called off not only most of the big dogs, but even some of the ravenous young pups of Missouri’s offense and defense.

Missouri starting quarterback Chase Daniel sizzled, completing 16 of 17 first-half passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He hit his last 14 passes, one short of the school record for consecutive completions in a game.

With four minutes left in the first half, Chase Patton replaced Daniel at quarterback.
