What’s at stake

Will Missouri fans fill Memorial Stadium for a game against a team that the Tigers’ second-stringers should whip? Never mind that a school record of more than 40,000 season tickets have been sold at Mizzou. That’s the next step for Missouri: getting the fans to act like Nebraska or Oklahoma fans and come to games where the opposition simply does not matter.

Cheers if …

Missouri builds a big lead at the half and then turns the game over to the reserves. This is an opportunity for the depth chart to gain experience. MU coach Gary Pinkel doesn’t like to run up the score, but if the reserves can keep doing that, let ’em do it.

Jeers if …

If the Missouri pass defense gives up more long passing plays. Even if the secondary shuts down the Redhawks’ ability to go deep, we won’t know if the problem is fixed until the Tigers play Nebraska. If Southeast Missouri can — even sparingly — do what Illinois did, then that is a huge concern.

Three things about Southeast Missouri

1 The Redhawks’ victory in its opening game wasn’t seamless. The Redhawks fell behind Southwest Baptist 28-12 before scoring the final 23 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

2 The Redhawks seem able to move the ball through the air, having gained 387 yards passing in their opening game. Miles Edwards caught 10 passes for 204 yards in game one.

3 Cornerback Eddie Calvin, out of St. Louis Rockwood Summit, already has three pass interceptions.

Key matchup

Missouri against itself. A blowout is expected and called for as well. It is college football, not a PC game of lawn tennis. Southeast Missouri State has been paid to come to Columbia as cannon fodder. The Tigers need to shoot ’em back to Cape Girardeau with complete dispatch.

Mike DeArmond’s pick: Missouri 41-10

Missouri will probably score more than 41, but we’re counting on Pinkel’s refusal to allow one of his teams to embarrass another (except Kansas) with needless points. Southeast should score on the MU reserves, but the Redhawks shouldn’t score much. They are a directional school, folks.
