Center stage

J.T. Tiller brings more of what coach Mike Anderson demands than perhaps any player in the nation: All-out effort and a defense-first attitude. He changes games without scoring in double digits.

First challenge

Where do the points come from? No returning player averaged 10 points a game last season. Two or three of the guards will have to step up their offense.

End game

After an Elite Eight finish that most considered beyond the reach of last year’s team, don’t sell this bunch short. An NCAA Tournament bid is expected again. A deep run would be a surprise.

WOMEN
Probable starters

Center stage

Jessra Johnson can do it all: Work inside for points and rebounds, drift outside — where she made 24 threes a year ago — and she’s a 70 percent free-throw shooter. Has to cut down on 85 turnovers from a year ago.

First challenge

Already faced. Starting point guard ripped up her knee in a preseason practice and is out for the year.

End game

At Big 12 media day in Kansas City, coach Cindy Stein said MU took it as an insult to be picked last. But she also said she understood why the team’s expectations were higher than anyone else’s. The end game for Mizzou may be the end of days for Stein as the coach.
