The winner retains control of its own destiny in the Big 12 North. The loser drops not only one game but also a potential tie-breaker to the winner.
Cheers if ...
Missouri makes it four in a row at home against a Nebraska team that once owned the Tigers. That would knock a wheel off the surprisingly full Nebraska bandwagon.
Jeers if ...
Missouri loses, because then the Tigers would need Nebraska to lose at least two and possibly three Big 12 conference games with a schedule that looks like sure victories against every other team except Oklahoma and Kansas.
Three things about Nebraska
1 Nebraska fans and some media representatives are crying foul over MU coach Gary Pinkel’s use of a helicopter to attend a high school game involving Nebraska QB commit Tyler Gabbert (MU QB Blaine Gabbert’s brother). This appeared in the Omaha World-Herald on Wednesday: “Pinkel’s grandstanding act in the helicopter — borrowed from the Rick Neuheisel book of recruiting — serves as the most visible evidence here of all that’s wrong with recruiting.”
2 Nebraska fans and some media representatives seem to have forgotten the fake tattoo Cornhuskers assistant coach Mike Ekeler wore when recruiting Bonne Terre, Mo., and current Nebraska linebacker Will Compton. A Blackshirts logo with Compton’s name on it.
3 The Cornhuskers have lost four of the last six games against Missouri, plus seven straight and 14 of the last 15 road games against ranked opponents.
Key matchup
Missouri’s offensive front five against the heralded Nebraska defensive front. If the Tigers give quarterback Blaine Gabbert enough time to throw, he should carve up a suspect Nebraska linebacking corps. If that does not happen, Missouri could be in trouble.
Mike DeArmond’s pick: Missouri 31-24
Missouri gets up early, and that helps negate the Nebraska running game, forcing the Cornhuskers’ Zac Lee to match passes with Blaine Gabbert.
