College buzz: K-State defensive lineman arrested

More Sports:

K-State lineman arrested

Kansas State senior defensive lineman Jeffrey Fitzgerald was arrested early Sunday morning by the Riley County Police Department and charged with driving under the influence.

“It was a simple DUI,” said Lt. Herb Crosby of the Riley County police. “An officer observed some erratic driving, stopped (Fitzgerald) and arrested him for DUI.”

Fitzgerald, 21, posted $750 bail. According to K-State sports information director Kenny Lannou, the matter will be handled internally.

Fitzgerald, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound defensive tackle, sat out the 2008 season after transferring from Virginia. In 2007, Fitzgerald started all 13 games as a sophomore, finishing third on the team in tackles (73) and sacks (7). He is expected to provide a considerable boost to the Wildcats’ defensive front.

Mizzou moves up

Missouri has finished a best-ever 36th nationally in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, a measure of overall athletic success.

It improved by one spot the finish of the MU athletic department in 2002-03.

Twelve of Mizzou’s 20 sport programs scored points for the school in this year’s competition, and seven of those registered top-25 national finishes, which ties the previous high for top-25 finishes in a season by MU (seven in 2004-05 during a 41st-place final standing).

The finish was the seventh best in the Big 12. Texas (sixth), Texas A&M (13th), Oklahoma (29th) and Nebraska (31st) led the way. Baylor (33rd) and Oklahoma State (35th) just edged the Tigers for the next rung on the ladder.

Other Big 12 rankings were: No. 57 Texas Tech, No. 58 Iowa State, No. 60 Colorado, No. 72 Kansas and No. 77 Kansas State.

Paulding is MVP in Germany

Former MU basketball star Rickey Paulding won the Finals MVP of the German BBL (Bundesliga Basketball League) after leading his EWE Baskets team to the league title.

Paulding averaged 19.2 points on 50.9-percent shooting and was 53.6 percent from three-point range.

Gillispie feud continues

The University of Kentucky Athletics Association has asked a federal judge in Texas to either dismiss former basketball coach Billy Gillispie’s lawsuit over his firing or move the case to Kentucky. Gillispie is claiming fraud and breach of contract.
