Cantwell wins shot put title at U.S. Track and Field championships

More Sports:

Sunday was another day of triumph for Christian Cantwell and another day of coming up short for Muna Lee.

Cantwell, a former Missouri shot-putter who won the silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, won the event Sunday in the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Cantwell won with a toss of 71 feet, 7 1/4 inches on his second attempt and assured himself a spot on the U.S. team in the world championships later this summer in Berlin. Dan Taylor was second at 69-7.

“I didn’t even throw that well today,” Cantwell said. “I thought I was going to throw better than that. Nothing is done yet, we’re just getting started.”

Lee is going to the world championships, too, after barely missing out on another gold medal Sunday in the 200-meter dash. A Central High graduate, Lee ran it in 22.13 seconds, but Allyson Felix edged her in 22.02.

Lee, who was edged by Carmelita Jeter inthe 100 final on Friday, lost the two races by a combined .111 seconds.

“At least I’m making a mark somewhere,” said Lee, who joins Tyson Gay as the only American sprinters with a chance to double in Berlin. “I’ll take that.”

In the men’s 800 final, Kansas State graduate Christian Smith finished fourth in 1 minute 46.92 seconds.

Shawn Crawford, a gold medalist from the 2004 Games, blew away his younger competition in winning the men’s 200. Crawford, 31, won in 19.73 seconds, besting 21-year-old newcomer Charles Clark by .27 seconds and 24-year-old Wallace Spearmon, whom he considers his protege, by .30.

“He doesn’t really care what happens; he wants to see everyone else run their best too,” Spearmon said of Crawford. “He stays on me. It shows the type of person he is. He’s a great competitor, and a great friend.”

Crawford won in a field that was missing Gay, who didn’t compete, having already qualified in the 100 and 200 thanks to his world championships in 2007.
